O Barbado da Terceira é a raça nacional de reconhecimento mais recente tendo ocorrido em Novembro de 2004. É reconhecida pelo Clube Português de Canicultura (C.P.C.) , a nível provisório,e não tem ainda reconhecimento pela Fédération Cynologique Internationale (F.C.I.). Constitui uma população autóctone dos Açores, mais particularmente da Ilha Terceira.

Poderá ser descendente de cães de caça trazidos pelos povoadores europeus em virtude da abundância de gado bravo nos Açores.
A raça tem sido historicamente usada no maneio e condução do gado bovino existente por toda a Terceira. Existem ainda alguns criadores que utilizam os seus cães no maneio de caprinos e ovinos.

Mais recentemente, tem sido adaptada a cão de companhia e de guarda de propriedades, sendo esta actualmente a função da maioria dos exemplares.

O Barbado da Terceira é um cão de porte médio, de ar robusto mas elegante. A sua pelagem é longa em todo o corpo, com sub-pêlo. Na cabeça forma típicas barbas que dão o nome à raça. As cores mais comuns são o preto, o fulvo, e o amarelo em diversas tonalidades e matizes. Podem apresentar manchas brancas na cabeça, pescoço, peito, ventre e ponta da cauda.

A nível de manutenção, e como não faz mudas de pêlo, as escovagens regulares (semanais ou quinzenais) são uma necessidade para manter a pelagem em boas condições

O Barbado é um cão voluntarioso e de carácter afirmado, pelo que necessita de um dono que saiba impor-se naturalmente; o seu ar de “ursinho de peluche” não deve levar a que se descurem as regras básicas de convivência. A sua maior felicidade é agradar ao dono, de quem quer estar sempre perto, pelo que é extremamente agradável de educar e treinar, aprendendo rápida e facilmente o que se lhe ensina. Dá-se bem com crianças, mas tal como ocorre com qualquer cão, as interacções deverão ser sempre vigiadas. Poderá entender-se bem com outros cães, mas tem tendência a ser um pouco brigão, principalmente com cães estranhos.

É necessário assegurar que o cão pode desgastar a sua energia, de preferência em actividades envolvendo o seu dono. Reforça-se assim o laço entre ambos e evita-se que o excesso de energia seja desviado para comportamentos não desejáveis.

The Barbado da Terceira is the most recently recognized Portuguese breed. The Portugueses Kennel Club ( C.P.C.) recognized it, on a provisional basis, on November 2004; it is not yet recognized by the Fédération Cinologique Internationale (F.C.I). It is a population native to the Azores Islands, in particular the Terceira Island. The breed’s origin come from hunting dogs brought by settlers from all over Europe, due to the amount of wild cattle in the Azores.

The Barbado da Terceira has always been used for herding and handling the cattle that exists all over the Terceira Island. There are some breeders who also use their dogs for herding sheep and goats.

In the last few years, the breed has been used as a pet and home guarding dog, and this is the work done by most animals nowadays.

The Barbado da Terceira is a medium sized dog , robust yet elegant air. In the.head form typical beards that give the name to breed. The coat is long and slightly wavy, with dense undercoat. It is traditionally clipped in the Summer. The existing coats vary much in colour and texture, but they should not be coarse. The accepted colours are black, wolf gray, yellow and fawn in all their shades; white spots are accepted in the limbs, head, neck, chest, belly and tip of tail.

The Barbado da Terceira is a breed that does not demand a great amount of care. The greatest care regards the coat – as it does not shed, regular brushing (weekly or at least every couple of weeks) is required to eliminate dead hair and keep the coat in good condition.

Like any herding dog, the Barbado is a strong-willed and assertive dog. It needs an owner that can naturally impose himself, otherwise the dog will try to be the dominant one however, its “teddy bear” look may lead some people to give in to its whimps, which can potentially lead to problems if the dog believes it is in charge. However, with an owner that has the basic notions of dog education, it is and extremely pleasant and loyal companion – after all, a Barbado’s greatest happiness is to please its owner!
The Barbado is a good companion for children. However, just like it happens with any dog, interactions should always be supervised, specially in the case of small children.
It gets along well with the other dogs of the house, but can be somewhat bully with strange dogs.

It is also necessary to ensure the dog can use up its energy, preferably in activities involving the owner. Their mutual bond is thus reinforced and it is avoided that the excess of energy is misplaced in undesirable behaviours.
